This course invites you to explore those questions head-on — examining today’s culture and the world’s major belief systems to discover whether any offer real purpose, lasting hope, and a deeper reason to live. Because the search you’re feeling might not be a problem to fix, it might be an invitation to something more.

Course Description

This course is for people who are longing for meaning, purpose and hope. It begins by identifying the major existential issues that so many people in today's culture struggle with. It then introduces the topic of worldviews - what they are, how a person's worldview is shaped, and if it can change. Since there are hundreds of worldviews, several ways of categorizing worldviews are presented, to help make better sense of them. Then, an overview of major worldviews is provided, including Agnosticism, Atheism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Humanism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Marxism, New Age, and Taoism. You will be asked to consider if all religions teach basically the same thing and if all worldviews are true. The major worldviews are then analyzed to see if any offer true hope. You will see that there is a worldview that offers true hope, both now and in the future.

Meet Your Instructor

RICHARD LOMBARD

Richard is Executive Director of WorldviewU, a nonprofit educational organization that helps people better understand the world’s belief systems. He not only teaches about worldviews, but is also an ongoing student of worldviews, a topic of nearly endless breadth and depth. Richard holds to the Christian worldview.

He has led workshops and given presentations on worldviews to Columbus City Schools teachers, Upper Arlington Rotary Club, Ohio State University Women’s Club, and various schools and churches. He recently appeared on a podcast hosted by Dr. Jeff Myers of Summit Ministries.

Richard is a certified cultural intelligence instructor through the Cultural Intelligence Center. He served on a cultural intelligence panel sponsored by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and has given cultural intelligence presentations to the Central Ohio InfoSec Summit, ISACA, National Church Residences, One Dublin, and other organizations.

He developed and led cultural intelligence programs while working in information technology at JPMorgan Chase and Nationwide Insurance. At Chase Richard started and led the Cultural Conversation Group for 3 years, in which monthly meetings were used to enhance employees’ cultural intelligence by discussing a variety of cultural topics. Chase employees from around the world participated in these sessions.

His career in information technology included roles as a project manager, audit and compliance specialist, and cybersecurity specialist. Most recently he worked in case management and fundraising for a nonprofit organization that serves refugees and immigrants.

He has a Master of Environment Science degree from Miami University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Earth Science from Denison University. He has completed several seminary courses on theology and related topics.

Richard has traveled to Canada, Europe, Honduras, India, and Israel. He lives in Columbus, Ohio in the United States.
